This high school soccer player is six and a half weeks into her recovery journey following ACL reconstruction surgery. She has achieved her targets for improving range of motion (ROM), reducing swelling, and strengthening her quadriceps muscles, signaling her progression into the second phase of her rehabilitation. The rehab will now include more advanced exercises to improve her dynamic knee stability.
To intensify this interactive drill, she uses strobe eyewear that disrupts her vision. Most of the research and clinical commentary with strobe eyewear has been after knee surgery, specifically anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) patients. The research has been investigating neuroplasticity for visual-motor training.
The clinical reasoning is
❌ Disrupted afferent input
❌ Altered proprioception
❌ Altered efferent output
❌ Change in postural control
❌ Change in movement control
The change in movement control is the reliance on visual feedback to maintain neuromuscular control. Treatment with strobe eyewear is utilized for visual-motor training with criterion-based exercise progressions.
During this exercise, four of the six BlazePods illuminate simultaneously, with the pattern being randomized to challenge her decision-making, reaction time, and eye-hand coordination. Her movements involve squats, reaching up and over, and shifting her weight between her left and right leg.
While using either hand, she must swiftly tap the green BlazePod while avoiding the distractor BlazePods (colored orange, blue, and pink). Quick reactions are essential for reacquiring her pain-free reaching motions. Introducing competition through gamification in rehabilitation is a valuable method to enhance patient engagement, overall experience, and, ultimately, the outcomes of the recovery process.
The BlazePods maintain her interest throughout the workout, enhancing her overall experience and improving performance, even as fatigue sets in.
Effective and efficient rehab is criterion-based, not time-based.
Physical therapy should be FUN.

Always consult your physician before beginning any exercise program. STOP exercising if you experience any symptoms of weakness, unsteadiness, light-headedness/dizziness, chest pain or pressure, nausea, or shortness of breath.
Performing these exercises should not cause pain. If you experience pain while exercising, decrease the speed of your movement. If the pain persists - STOP. Mild soreness after exercising may be experienced after beginning a new exercise.
