Let’s have a little break from castles. Today we’re in the medieval town of Najac. After the Albigensian Crusades it was transformed into a bastion of royal power in Southern France. This brought many construction projects with it. Together we’ll explore some of the gems this town has to offer. There’s a market square surrounded by timber framed houses where people would sell goods and barter. Further along is a genuine medieval fountain, cut out of a single granite block over 600 years ago. Of the houses in this town there are a couple that also stand out like the Governor’s house with its arched doorways and original windows. We pass through a gatehouse which was part of an enclosure that ran around the town. We end at the large church built in Languedoc Gothic style with large buttresses and finely carved decorations. The entire town is overshadowed by its large fortress, but to see that, you’ll have to return next week! Thanks for joining us!
