A non-binding referendum being held in the Netherlands on April 6th will have an impact on the fate of the EU-Ukraine Association Agreement. The Dutch will be voting on whether or not Ukraine should be allowed to enter into an association with the European Union, a deal that would lift the country’s trade barriers with the EU.
“I wouldn’t say that the vast majority of the Dutch people have a clear understanding of what they are supposed to vote or do,” stresses a freelance Dutch journalist Eva Cukier about the topic that is largely being discussed in the Netherlands. “Many people think this is the first step into closing membership with Ukraine.”
The referendum was triggered by a group of eurosceptics, who have a strong presence in the aggressive ‘No’ campaign side of the debate. However, they’re presenting “a lot of arguments that are not always true,” says Cukier.
Although polls show that the majority of the Dutch population does not support Ukraine’s integration, a ‘No’ vote “will not stop the implementation of the agreement,” adds Cukier.
