If you walk towards the train station in the city of Vilnius in Lithuania, you may think you are in a Science Fiction film. Opposite the entrance to the station is a doorway in the shape of a circle - a portal - to another land.
The technology is not so advanced that you can walk through the portal - yet. And the "land" in this case, is not a distant planet, but the city of Lublin in Poland. But - as you look into the portal, you can see and interact with the people on the other side.
You can wave, and watch, and see people just like you - with lives and relationships and problems - in a city hundreds of miles away.
The portal uses the Internet, cameras operating in real time, and huge screens to create the illusion of looking into another world.
The company behind the project - which is also called Portal - has already begun preparations for similar versions in other countries, such as the United Kingdom and Iceland.
The project began five years ago with the aim of removing divisions between nations and people. However, with the pandemic having a negative effect on people’s ability to travel, organisers think it is needed now more than ever.
They want people to be able to connect and see what humans in different places are doing and share their own lives with them, so that people can learn to understand each other - and leave disagreements and misunderstandings between countries and people where they belong - in the past.
