► ABOUT THIS TREK
In November-December 2024, we hiked the Three Passes Trek in Nepal in 17 days.
It all started on Saturday, 16 of November, when we left Romania for our big adventure. Our first flight was from Bucharest to Dubai. The flight was smooth, with clear skies, and we landed in Dubai around 8 PM.
For first-time visitors like us, getting the free visa on arrival took some time, but we were pleasantly surprised to receive a 24-hour SIM card with 10GB of internet. Since it was late, and we had no hotel booked, we decided to explore Dubai instead of paying for just a few hours of accommodation.
At the airport, an employee suggested we leave our big backpacks at check-in to roam the city more freely—great idea! However, after some back and forth, we found out we could only check them in three hours before departure. So, we took our backpacks and headed out.
First, we grabbed water from a supermarket and some food from a local restaurant—it was delicious! After exploring a bit, we returned to the airport, checked in without issues, and boarded our flight to Nepal.
The second flight was even smoother, and we managed to catch some sleep. A highlight was seeing the Himalayas for the first time—absolutely breathtaking! After a quick stop in another town, we reached Kathmandu.
Getting the Nepal visa was straightforward but cost $50. We also grabbed a local SIM and exchanged some dollars for rupees. Instead of taking a taxi to Thamel, we decided to walk for one and a half hours to get a feel for the city.
There we decided first to go to a travel agency and check if we could get plane tickets for the next day.
We were lucky so we brought tickets directly from Kathmandu to Lukla.
Another cheaper option was to take a night jeep to another town and take a flight from there, but for only 20 dollars we decided it’s better to get some sleep and take a direct flight.
We also took accommodation at a hotel just near the agency.
Being very tired but also hungry, we decided to go for a walk through Thamel to find something to eat.
We were very lucky to find a restaurant called ALWAYS HAPPY VEGAN and it was perfect because we both prefer vegan food over meat.
The food was great and there we got our first Dal Bath – which is the traditional dish of Nepal.
The next morning, we headed to the domestic airport early for our Lukla flight. The airport was chaotic, with flights delayed and shuffled around. Our original 9 AM flight eventually left around 1 PM.
The plane was tiny, seating just 14 passengers, and the flight was as thrilling as they say, with stunning views of the Himalayas. The landing in Lukla was smooth, despite the airport’s reputation as the most dangerous in the world.
Once in Lukla, our adventure officially began. We stayed an extra hour at the airport to film planes and helicopters taking off and landing—it was totally worth it!
I think it is a breathtaking moment that you can have here, just in the heart of the Himalaya Mountains!
