A few kilometers outside Kastoria, the Koresteia villages are a living monument to Greek History. Built in the 19th century, with the characteristic red "briquettes", the where almost entirely abbandoned during the Greek Civil War. Most of the residents emigrated to Australia and Canada. Some of the villages are still inhabited, while others are almost entirely empty. The is a new modern settlement (aptly named Neos Oikismos, which means New Settlement) in the center of the municipality area where most of the residents live (about 500)
