Bridal Chorus from Lohengrin by Richard Wagner performed by Ben Bloor on the 45 stop 1954 Downes/Walker organ of the London Oratory Church on Tuesday 15th August 2023.
The famous 'Bridal Chorus' from Richard Wagner's 1850 opera 'Lohengrin' is used the world over as the entry processional for weddings, after it was popularised by its use at the marriage of Queen Victoria's eldest daughter, Victoria, to Prince Frederick William of Prussia in 1858. Colloquially known in English-speaking countries as 'Here comes the bride', the original context in the opera is of the bride Elsa being escorted to her bridal chamber, rather than containing any ceremonial or religious connotations, making its use in church controversial. Nevertheless its popularity has endured over the years, due to its easily recognisable tune.
