Machining Aluminum Wheels in the Automotive Industry
Alloy wheels are normally produced through casting or forging, which typically provides lighter weight with no compromise to structural strength. Aluminum wheels are machined with carbide uncoated and PCD inserts for roughing and finishing operations.
ISCAR has developed complete solutions for machining aluminum wheels to increase productivity and profitability, with standard carbide uncoated and PCD inserts featuring chip formers and polished edges for optimized chip formation and a longer edge life. Outer dimension turning, inner dimension turning, and undercut grooving and turning operations are performed by GRIP multifunction turning tools that can operate in a sequence of grooving and turning modes.
External, boring and DTF tools are available in a variety of geometries and angles for maximum selection flexibility.
The tools feature internal coolant channels designed for machining aluminum and to prevent chip problems. The DTF system is interchangeable, enabling quick replaceability of the heads on the same shank with a very high accuracy. The system is designed with a dovetail face contact area for maximum stability and rigidity. ISOTURN combined turning tools are used for the bore turning operation, with the recommended grades IC20 and ID5.
Lug hole drilling operations can be performed by SUMO-CHAM combined drilling tools with recommended grade 08, or with PCD drills. All SUMO-CHAM drill heads have a 25° positive cutting rake designed with a sharp cutting edge and polished rake face. The drill body includes two coolant channels for efficient flushing of the cutting edge. The geometries of the heads are designed to provide optimal chip evacuation, drill head life, surface finish and reliability.
Valve hole drilling can be performed with SUMO-CHAM combined drilling tools or PCD drills.
