A Chattanooga police officer originally placed on administrative leave after shooting at a man over the weekend, has now been placed back on duty.
Chattanooga police department spokesperson Nathan Hartwig said that there were at least two suspects shooting at people at the Southside Reunion when Officer Justin Headden engaged one of them. In a news release Hartwig said their were gang members at the Reunion, but there is no evidence to support the claim that they were involved in the shots fired.
Napoleon Donut Williams is a retired police officer and was an organizer for the annual Southside Reunion.
People bring their families, their grandkids, and just have a good time. You're not supposed to come in here and tear this up. You're not supposed to do that, said Williams.
The annual family event ended about 2 hours early after the shooting.
People were running, trying to get out of the way. Can you imagine little kids, people running over each other? That's not what we're supposed to be about, he said.
Headden fired several rounds at on of the suspects, but no one was hit. The suspects have not been found.
I'm mad, I'm mad. Don't let me come out of retirement. I'm mad, said Williams.
He said the officer did nothing wrong%2
