There are many different styles of kimono recently. However, no matter how much you arrange it, there is one rule you must follow. That is, the left and right sides of the collar. The right side must always be under, and the left side over. In other words, your collar should make a “y” shape if you see it from the other side.
Why is reversing it such a big taboo? It is because reversing it would be the same as a death garment. A death garment is a pure white kimono worn by the deceased so that he or she can safely go to heaven.
There are various theories as to why death garments are worn with the right collar over the left. Some say that it was to clearly distinguish the dead from the living, or because noblemen in the past wore it the opposite way, and it is to show respect to the dead.
If you have a chance to wear a kimono or yukata in Japan, I hope you can keep this in mind for me.
