Cote d'Ivoire is sending, for the first time, a combat unit of 150 soldiers to Mali. The troops will be joining the United Nations peacekeepers in the tense Timbuktu region known as MINUSMA. Mali's north fell under the control of jihadists linked to Al-Qaeda in 2012. A French-led military has largely ousted the militants. But militants continue to mount attacks on civilians and security forces. On Tuesday, at least eight Malian soldiers were killed and four others wounded in the central region of Segou. Authorities say their vehicle hit a mine and they were ambushed by militants.
