This video shows the rare and remarkable process of the detachment and deployment of the wings of two FAB-500M62 glider bombs with UMPC, which were released from the Su-34 bomber. The FAB-500M62 is a Soviet-designed 500-kilogram general purpose air-dropped bomb with a high-explosive warhead, primarily used by the Russian Aerospace Forces.
The UMPC is a Unified Module for Gliding and Guidance, which transforms a crude ‘dumb’ bomb into a weapon that is (at least in theory) relatively cheap, accurate and useable from a standoff range. The UMPC kit consists of a tail section with four pop-out wings and a guidance system that may use satellite navigation or other methods.
