WhEn learning to use clipess pedals, it is good to know what not to do should you end up falling over. Often cyclists put out their arm in an effort to brace themselves or to stop the fall. There are 2 problems with this reaction: 1. it won't work - your arm is not long enough to hold you up and stop you from falling. By the time your hand hits, you're so teetered over you can't stop the fall 2. And extended arm vs a tucked arm increases the chance that you will break your wrist, arm, collarbone - some or all 3.
Steps for clipping in:
1. hands on hoods & applying brakes
2. clipped in foot in a power position (1, 2 or 3 o'clock of pedal stroke - where you can push down to get momentum)
3. Simultaneously, release the brakes & push down with clipped in foot, & push off with foot on ground
4. Pedal with one leg until you have enough momentum to pause & flip the pedal (if single sided)
5. Once pedal is flipped so you can engage the cleats pause at the bottom of the pedal stroke and push down to engage get cleat to clip into pedal
6. if you don't get the "click" do not panic. Look up - be aware of your surrounding and remember that you can pedal with one foot and rest the unclipped foot on top of the pedal until you have a chance to repeat step 5
Never ever ever panic. At the worst you can pedal with one foot engaged for a very long time. At the very worst, you can gradually pull off to the side of the road, review in your mind what to do and give it another go.
