IMPULSO
17-piece Big Band Chart with solos for trombone 1, alto sax 1, trumpet 2
Impulso is a latin big band chart that was recorded for Alan Ferber's second big band album, titled “Jigsaw.” The initial chord progression was inspired by the last 8 bars of Joe Henderson’s “Inner Urge.” The counterpoint bass line idea was written next, suggesting a 2-3 clave pattern. Using this loop as a springboard, the overall form of the piece took shape through a combination of melodic counterpoint and solo improvisations that move from lower to higher instrumental ranges (trombone -- alto sax -- trumpet). This piece was recorded at Systems Two in Brooklyn, NY and features the composer (Alan Ferber) on trombone, John O'Gallagher on alto saxophone, and Alex Norris on trumpet. Total time: 7:52
3-time grammy-nominated jazz trombonist Alan Ferber has been called “one of the jazz world’s premier composers and arrangers for larger groups” (All About Jazz-NY) and can be heard as a trombonist on recordings ranging from jazz (Gerald Wilson, Toshiko Akiyoshi) to indie rock (Sufjan Stevens, The National) to rock/pop/world (Paul Simon, Peter Gabriel). The Northern California native continues to blaze his path forward through work that reflects today’s wide ranging musical landscape, brought into clear focus by an artist true to his craft and to himself.
