2. SOUNDBITE (English) Merrick Garland, U.S. Attorney General:
"Before I begin, I just think we need to reflect on the horrific events in Highland Park, Illinois. This location, is just 20 minutes from the house I grew up in and I know it extremely well. It's just another horrific reminder of the violence and particularly the gun violence that we face and that we must do everything in our power to end. We don't need any more reminders of this."

3. SOUNDBITE (English) Merrick Garland, U.S. Attorney General:
"Operation North Star was a 30-day anti-violence crime initiated initiative conducted by the Marshals Service in the ten, apprehending the most violent criminals with warrants in ten cities across the country. That was done in June. They apprehended over 1500 fugitives in those cities, most of whom were wanted for the most serious, violent, and harmful offenses, including in particular homicide."

4. SOUNDBITE (English) Merrick Garland, U.S. Attorney General:
"This initiative reflects the Anti-Violence Crime Initiative that we've had in place since the beginning of 2021, which really has three parts. One is a very close partnership between all the federal law enforcement agencies and our state and local partners. In this particular matter, there are a very large number of state and local task force officers who worked hand in glove with the members of the Marshal Service. The second part is a very close partnership with the communities in which the violence occurred. And here I want to again thank the marshals very much for being careful about engaging with the community, getting information from the community, and giving information to the community about why you guys were there and what you were doing. And that was an enormous help in the ultimate results. And then the last part, of course, is to remove from the streets those individuals who are the most significant drivers of violent crime. We find this to be the most successful and the swiftest way of bringing that violence under control.
