International aid workers organising the relief operation in the
earthquake ravaged mountains in the north-east of Afghanistan said on Thursday (12/02) the operation was being complicated by the struggle for control of the region by rival armies.
Humanitarian organisations are trying to establish a relief operation in the regional centre, Rostaq. At least 4,000 people were killed and 15,000 were left homeless by the earthquake which hit the mountainous region on February 4.
The area is controlled by troops loyal to opposition commander Ahmad Shah Masood who has resisted efforts by the Islamic Taliban militia to capture his mountain strongholds.
Desperately needed aid deliveries are being hampered by the weather. With temperatures rising to up to 60 degrees Farenheit Wednesday's (11/2) heavy snowfall has melted turning the roads to mud, making them almost impassable.
