For adult beginners & even those whom studies the 'Way' for a long period of time, knee strain & injuries would be the most common problems we shall face when the art requires long periods of kneeling up and down of Seiza regardless of Budo or other Japanese Cultural Arts.
One fortunate levity that Seitei have is it allows Iaidoka to practice & grade in Standing positions as well - particularly for those who have knee problems. Technically the techniques and leg movements are essentially the same, so for those who wants to put less strain in their knees & those who are not fortunate to have a soft practice surface or misplaced their knee pads - try Kata 1 - 4 standing.
of course whenever possible it is advisable to wear knee pads or practice in soft surface that does not put heavy pressure on our knees. However sometimes when it reach that stage we need to consider protecting it more from deteriorating knees.
