The Chennai City Police’s investigation into the Anna University sexual assault case has come under judicial scrutiny. The mishandling of the case has raised numerous questions, particularly after sensitive details about the survivor were leaked into the public domain. The incident has also highlighted concerns about student safety across educational institutions in Tamil Nadu.
While opposition parties demanded accountability, the Chennai police and the state government attempted to downplay the incident, prompting the Madras High Court to intervene. The court strongly criticized both the police and the state government for their lapses in handling the case. It condemned the police for failing to protect the survivor’s dignity and ordered the Tamil Nadu government to pay an interim compensation of ₹25 lakh for the police’s failures.
In a strongly worded order issued on Saturday, December 28, a bench comprising Justices S.M. Subramaniam and V. Lakshminarayanan dismissed the First Information Report (FIR), stating it was written in a manner that shamed the survivor. The court also directed the formation of an all-women IPS officers’ Special Investigation Team (SIT) to take over the investigation. Additionally, it instructed the Tamil Nadu government to take action against Greater Chennai Commissioner of Police A Arun for his role in the lapses.
