Another excellent question from my Instagram followers. There is a unique condition that affects the complex structure of the spine itself. There are three layers of protective tissue that cover the spinal cord: the dura mater, arachnoid mater, and pia mater. It's the arachnoid mater that looks a little like a thin, cellophane of spiderweb material that gives it its name. Some diseases like meningitis or direct trauma can inflame or scar the arachnoid mater and trigger high levels of pain and neurological issues. This is a challenging condition to treat surgically.
