I've been tempted to buy some reference books for artists / photo pose books for a while, to test how good they actually are. I bought 2 cheaper ones, People and Poses by Buddy Scalera, comic artists photo reference & The Fantasy Figure Artists Reference File by Peter Evans. I would also love to get my hands on some of the Japanese pose books like the super pose series, hype angle series etc..

Over all, they are actually a little better than I expected, although they are older books, so newer photo reference books would hopefully be even better print quality. They definitely have their flaws, especially when it comes to the size of some of the photos included, and the loss of detail in some of the shadow areas. As mentioned in the video, I think Photo reference from places such as art station, being higher resolution & fantastic quality are far superior, but not everyone likes to be staring at a screen all the time, so sometimes it's nice to have a break! I will attach a few recommended & cheap photo reference packs for figure drawing below.

A quick note about the Buddy Scalera comic reference books. There are actually a few others in the series, a male specific reference book 'Comic Artist's Photo Reference: Men and Boys', a female specific reference book 'Comic Artist's Photo Reference: Women and Girls' & a book that I think contains all of them in one epic sizes book called 'Colossal Collection of Action Poses'. Judging from the Amazon review, you should not buy the kindle version of these as it seems as though it cuts lots of the page off.
