On 4 March 1959, ITN broadcast Robin Day's latest Roving Report from the Soviet Union, "From Ballet to Ballots", in which the presenter travelled to Kyiv, the capital of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic, and the Russian cities of Moscow and Leningrad. Day reported on the cultural differences between the Ukrainian and Russian republics, and observed as the Soviet population went to the polls in a uniquely Soviet election. Day's report was filmed as British Prime Minister Harold Macmillan undertook his own trip to the USSR, as Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev sought to bring about a thaw in the Cold War by improving relations with the West.
