A grave prediction over pollution in the Thames making in uninhabitable for wildlife such as seals has been avoided by major changes since the 1950's, a survey has shown as the seal population doubles. The Zoological Society of London's (ZSL) fifth annual seal survey scoured the water for seals by land, sea and air, last year, as they attempted to get an accurate picture of the population. Researchers found seal numbers have doubled in five years to 3,500, as fishermen repeatedly claim their catch is being stolen by seals. Controls were put in place after the 1957 warning to control sewage discharge into the Thames. As a result, the population of grey seals has shot up 19 per cent from 2,406 in 2017, while the harbour seal population rose by 14 per cent in the same period.
