University of Exeter Grand Challenges 2015

Digital technology has tremendous transformative power.

It has revolutionised business and entertainment, enabled cheap and easy communication between people around the world, is democratising manufacturing, and has been instrumental in bringing justice to individuals and peoples. It has the potential to deliver personalised health care, increase food security and monitor the planet.

On the flip side, digital technology enables monopolies, homogenises culture and allows governments to keep tabs on their citizens. It is an easy, anonymous channel for pornography and hate speech; and society worries about children who abandon their families for virtual companions.

In this theme we will explore the ways in which the tool of digital technology shapes the societies we live in. Through hands-on workshops, co-creation, debate and film we will explore its potential and look for ways for society to manage the challenges it brings.
