You’re on a long road trip and getting hungry, and you see a sign for your favorite restaurant flashing “ALL YOU CAN EAT!” What do you do? Stopover, of course.
Just like humans, migratory big game animals like deer, elk, and pronghorn also make pit stops during long journeys to fill up on good eats. In this episode of Migration Minute, learn exactly how some ungulates use migration stopovers fuel their seasonal migrations, and why these food patches play an out-sized role in sustaining herds. Thanks to trail cams and GPS tracking collars, we can see exactly what these animals are up to at stopover habitats.
