The first mention of Brčko can be found in Turkish documents from 1548. when it ceases to be just a border fortress, but across the Sava pier and a station on the way to Venetian salt from Obrovac. The people of Brčac transported goods and passengers across the Sava for free, and for this service they were exempted from paying many duties to the Ottoman authorities. Since at that time Bosnian Posavina was mostly inhabited by Muslims, it can be reliably claimed that they founded Brčko. As early as 1560, the Flemish geographer Gerhard Kremer, the author of the first map of the world, wrote down the name Barka for a settlement on the banks of the Sava, and the beginning of the development of trade in Brčko and through Brčko is related to that period. The old city center along the banks of the Sava and Brka rivers has seen rapid development since the thirties of the 19th century, thanks primarily to the export of dried and raw plums to the countries of Western Europe and even to America. Brčko already became a strong trading center in 1870 with about 3,000 inhabitants. In 1869 Brčko is connected to Sarajevo via Tuzla by telegraph. A year later, the Post Office also opened. In 1891, the Posavina Hotel was built. 1892 – The City Hall. Several buildings from that time, such as the houses of famous merchants, the brothers Krsmanović and Kučukalić, are on the list of cultural heritage of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Brčko is the largest port in Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is the administrative seat of the Brčko District of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and the economic and cultural center of Bosanska Posavina.
