Iruvar stars Mohanlal as a struggling actor in 1950s. Prakash Raj is a small time writer. Both Mohanlal and Prakash Raj are looking for opportunities in Films. With Prakash Raj's witty dialogues, Mohanlal manages to get selected in an audition. Prakash Raj joins politics and later asks Mohanlal to help with the party's publicity. Through the years, Mohanlal and Prakash Raj drift apart becoming rivals at a point.

Iruvar was supposedly based on the real life relationship of actor MGR and writer-turned-politician M Karunanidhi. Starting their lives on humble means, both of them rose to greater heights only to drift apart from each other. Iruvar Movie is considered as Mani Ratnam's best movie. Iruvar Tamil Movie also courted controversies at the time of release due to its content.
