While a brief break from fiber can help an inflamed gut feel better, it should NEVER be a long term plan. Sure it can make the symptoms feel better, but it's making the underlying gut dysfunction worse to stay on a low fiber diet indefinitely.
I have helped people with IBS, Crohns, Ulcerative Colitis and other inflammatory gut diseases become symptom free in a matter of weeks on fiber-filled smoothies! How? The goal is to reverse the disease causing the gut problems, not just avoid symptoms by not challenging the gut, which makes it weaker while the disease continues.
It can be difficult at first. My introduction to the disease-reversal foods depends on what symptoms they have when we start. We may have to build up tolerance, but the goal is to get them on the foods that nourish the body and exercise that gut as soon as possible and avoid inflammatory foods that make them worse. Their gut works better, their bodies feel lighter, and their aches and pains and fatigue go away.
In my 6 Week Rapid Recovery Group, a member with UC had no symptoms by week 5. A recent 4 week Rapid Recovery client with Crohns had no symptoms on full hyper-nourishment, CRP went to .5, and her stool Calprotectin went from 1570 mcg/g to 152 mcg/g at her 2 month checkup after starting Rapid Recovery with me. I have had many clients with IBS go from low FODMAP to my full Rapid Recovery Program and their gut was normal for the first time since their diagnosis!
These folks are eating tons of raw vegetables every day, chia and flaxseeds, so much fiber! The program is not about avoiding symptoms, it's about actually allowing the gut and the body to heal. It's about actually reversing the disease-process with incredible nutrition, rather than avoiding nutrient-dense foods and weakening the gut.
It's like the old joke when you go to the doctor and say my arm hurts when I raise it and the doctor says don't do that. That isn't the solution! The solution is to heal so you CAN do that!
Not everyone can jump into hyper-nourishment with gut issues. Some people have such weak guts we have to go very slowly and build up their diet, but the goal is still to nourish and then hyper-nourish!
