(5 Jun 2018) Former Catalan government officials in exile, including former president Carles Puigdemont, on Tuesday filed a civil case in Belgium against Spanish judge Pablo Llarena who is in charge of the investigation into the Catalan independence referendum held last year.
The case was filed at a Brussels tribunal and the first hearing is scheduled on September 4th.
Christophe Marchand, a Belgian lawyer representing the exiled Catalans, said the claim against Llarena is that he violated the principle of 'presumption of innocence' by giving statements in the media expressing his opinions on the case.
The case filed is civil, rather than penal, with only symbolic damages of one euro being requested for damage caused to the plaintiffs.
Lawyers said they had also applied to the Spanish Supreme Court for the judge's recusal from the case.
