Eceabat used to be known as Maydos or its Greek name Madytos, its strategic position opposite Canakkale made it an important key position in the First World War. The town is also the nearest town to the Gallipoli Campaign and the war graves and memorials of the soldiers that fell in battle. Ferries from Canakkale drop their passengers off at Eceabat and the nearby Kilitbahir castle which is a major tourist attraction. Turkish Travels ( Türkiye )
