At the Aerodynamics, Wind Energy, Flight Performance & Propulsion (AWEP) Department at the TU Delft, Wouter Terra and his colleagues are working on the question of how to make cyclist cycle faster: they do this by measuring the aerodynamic drag of the air around the cyclist, with camera's and lasers while the cyclist is moving through the space.
Their approach is something new: usually this aerodynamic drag is measured with a cyclist standing still and the air flowing around him, but here they do the opposite. Today they've evaluated the accuracy of their measurements. Understanding aerodynamic drag might make the difference between a won or a lost Tour the France!
