Do university rankings matter? Should it be a priority for you when you consider to study abroad?
Susan Fang, British Education Specialist (CEO and Founder of OxBridge Holdings) and Abhishek Nakhate, CEO and Founder of Zoom Abroad, dive deep to help you understand how and when do university rankings help in your decision to study abroad.
They discuss two important questions to help students choose the best fit university for themselves.
1. How do University Rankings work?
2. How to use these university rankings in their decision making?
According to Susan Fang, the importance of university ranking lies in the student's priority. Every student has different prioirties while considering to study abroad and hence the importance of a university's ranking differs from student to student. According to Abhishek, the ranking of a university is directly proportional to its reputation.
They go on to discuss about the different university ranking providers. They discuss how it is important to understand that most of the rankings that you see are not 'official', which means they are not provided by a Government body. These rankings are either provided by the media or a private conglomerate who rank universities basis their interest. An important tip given by Susan Fang is to firstly decide your study destination, whether you would like to study in UK, USA, Canada, Australia etc and then check the university rankings given by the media or private organizations of that particular country. For eg: If you are looking to study in the UK, you can check The Times Ranking or the The Guardian University ranking. These are both local ranking providers. However, if you are looking to get a global ranking of a university, you can refer to The Times Higher Education Ranking or QS World Ranking.
They further discuss what the student's priority is. If they are looking for a more research driven experience, they should refer to the The Times Higher Education or The Times university ranking. However, if they are looking for a pragmatic driven experience, they can refer to The Guardian ranking or QS World Ranking.
