One of Cicero’s most significant miscalculations was his belief that he could manipulate Octavian for his own political ends. After Caesar’s death, Cicero saw the young Octavian as a tool to eliminate Marc Antony and restore the Senate’s authority. He supported Octavian, thinking that once Antony was out of the picture, he could control the inexperienced heir. However, Cicero severely underestimated Octavian’s ambition and political skill. Octavian soon aligned with Antony and Lepidus to form the Second Triumvirate, turning against Cicero and the Senate. Cicero’s misjudgment cost him not only his political influence but also his life.
