This is our second video protocol for the Fresh Eyes on Ice Project ([ Ссылка ]) to demonstrate the techniques and tools needed for freshwater ice monitoring and science educations projects in Alaska. This video demonstrates a simple approach for measuring ice thickness and snow depth on lakes and rivers through the winter. The approach is geared towards teachers and their K-12 students, but could be used by other citizen scientists or community-based monitoring teams to track ice and snow through the winter and compare it to other ice and snow data records to evaluate changing conditions long-term. These basic methods also provide the basis for a range of winter science educations projects specific to your lake, river, and region. More details of the Fresh Eyes on Ice project can be found at fresheyesonice.org.
