SOS visit GSI Studios in New York and speak with Engineer & Producer Josh Giunta, who shares some of his extensive knowledge of piano recording and microphone techniques.
In this video, Josh shows how he sets up microphones for recording the Yamaha CX6 grand piano at GSI Studios. Using a range of Telefunken and Neumann condenser microphones and Royer and Coles ribbon microphones, Josh demonstrates the variety of stereo configurations he likes to use. He details the importance of microphone placement, selecting the right microphone for the task, and how to deal with phase issues when recording piano with complex microphone arrays.
In Part 2, we join Josh Giunta in the control room to listen back to the microphones and learn more about his mixing process.
