In this video we are discussing trail camera strategies for the month of December and going into the late season for whitetails. We are calling it our December Trail Camera Checklist.
The first trail camera strategy for December is to keep monitoring primary scrapes to monitor the does that are coming back into their second estrous cycle. It's no secret that a doe will come back into estrous 28 days after her first cycle if she is not bred the first round. Also, yearling does and doe fawns will be reaching sexual maturity sometime in the late season so monitoring primary scrapes throughout the month of December will give you a good idea of those does that are ready to be bred.
The second thing we want to talk about is displaced bucks. During the gun season, it is possible for bucks to be pushed out of their core areas to areas with less than ideal whitetail habitat. If your property typically doesn't hold a lot of bucks because the habitat is lacking, these times can be really crucial for your success.
The third point we make in this video is focusing trail cameras on primary food sources in your area. Post rut, food is king. The bucks will be pounding the food sources to recoup from the craziness the rut brings. The late season, cold temps can get a big buck in trouble if you are set up and waiting for them.
And the last thing we want to talk about is not necessarily about trail camera placement, it's more of a hunting strategy or camera monitoring strategy. That is paying attention to wind speed. Excessively high winds in the brutal cold temps will seemingly shut deer movement down. Deer are not going to put themselves out in the elements and put themselves at risk. However, as soon as the wind speeds die down, deer will be back up and moving and heading to those last available food sources.
The late season can be an amazing time to hunt if you are on your A game. So, check off your checklist and make sure you're ready for the final stretch of deer season!
