Summertime - Ukulele Chord Melody Tutorial with Tabs - George Gershwin
Today we are going to learn how to play "Summertime" by George Gershwin in the chord melody style. This truly is an epic song, part of what makes it so cool is the harmony an how instead of playing just a stagnate chord the rhythm moves with this vibe of a blues shuffle almost, but instead of shuffling through some of the more basic intervals, like the 5th and the 6th, the shuffle moves through the 2nd and minor 3rd intervals, giving it a really dark, eerie and melancholy vibe, count counter intuitive to the title of the song and the lyrics which suggest something bright, vibrant, and happy.
The song is structured to be one verse that happens three times in the song. The 1st an 3rd time through are exactly the same while the 2nd time has a little bit of variance. We will walk you through every single measure in the song so you get each one down and we will do a play-along for both the 1st and 2nd verses. There is also a really cool coda that ends on an Am9 chord giving it even more space action. When I play it I play 1st and 2nd verses than the coda, if you want to sound more like the recording the order would be 1st verse, 2nd verse, 1st verse, coda, it is up to you how you want to arrange it.
