Whether you love it or hate it, Durian is undoubtedly the King of Fruits. But within the different types of durian, the ‘Mao Shan Wang Durian’ (Musang King) holds the crown of being the most expensive, tastiest and most sought after for its rich flavour and buttery texture. Originally from the state of Kelantan (Malaysia) and also less popularly known by its original name Raja Kunyit, the Musang King is easily distinguishable by a brown star at the bottom, thorns with huge bases and pyramidal in shape. These are plenty all over in Malaysia.
But in Singapore, it is good to get it from a reputable source such as the Combat Durian Stall at Balestier. This trusted spot for durian lovers has been dishing out durians from Malaysia since 1965 and known to supply the best quality Mao Shan Wang (inferior qualities are commonly sold at a lower price - ask the cashier). Get hold of them before the season is over.
