Defense ministers from the Group of Seven (G7) major democracies met in Naples on Saturday (October 19) to discuss the war in Ukraine and the current situation in the Middle East.
Italian Defencs Minister, Guido Crosetto, welcomed his counterparts from Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Japan and the United States, as well as Nato Secretary General, Mark Rutte, and European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Josep Borrell, to the Palazzo Reale, official venue of the summit.
During his opening remarks, Crosetto talked about "a deteriorated security framework" and "the confrontation between two different, perhaps incompatible, visions of the world.”
Italy, which holds the rotating presidency of the G7, has decided for the first time in history to include a session on defence in the ministerial meetings programme.
The ministers will meet in two sessions, one in the morning and one in the afternoon, while bilateral activities are expected to take place afterwards. A trilateral meeting between Italy, Britain and Japan is also planned to discuss the Global Combat Air Programme, which involves the development of a sixth-generation stealth fighter.
