Nick Squires in Rome says polls indicate the centre- left Democratic Party are likely to win the next election, but the prospect of Silvio Berlusconi returning to politics is worrying financial markets.
The chance of Silvio Berlusconi returning to power is spooking financial markets along with many Italian citizens, says Nick Squires, The Telegraph's correspondent in Rome.
Mario Monti, the serving technocrat Prime Minister, announced at the weekend that he was to resign early after Mr Berlusconi's People of Freedom party withdrew crucial support in parliament.

"Mario Monti came in, he was seen as a very sober, authoritative figure.
