Way back in the day before Xenons and Lasers in cinema projection, the light source was for a projector was via a carbon Arc Lamp. A positive and Negative carbon rod were struck together then pulled apart. A creator was formed in the positive carbon, which reflected this white light onto a mirror, which in turn reflected back towards the projector gate. Properly lined up, one got a great light output
