The European Court of Justice rules today that Poland has violated EU rule of law principles by creating a government-appointed 'constitutional tribunal' that can overrule the domestic and EU judiciary.

It follows a day of protest in Warsaw yesterday against the hard-right government's actions, which also includes creating a law which critics say is designed to precent opposition leader Donald Tusk, former Polish prime minister and European Council president, from holding office.
