In the long history of world languages, I am the first person to translate directly from Chinese to Tamil. However, my relationship with language learning was not always easy. It all started with my struggle to learn English.
Although I became fluent in Tamil at a young age through reading books, my school grades in Tamil were average. My academic journey took a turn for the worse when I joined an English medium program in higher secondary school, and I continued to struggle in language subjects. But then I realized that my difficulties were not due to the subject matter but rather my approach to learning.
Once I could unlock my learning abilities, I became better at acquiring languages. When I passed the UPSC Civil Services Exam and joined the Indian Foreign Service, I was required to learn a foreign language. (We call it CFL or Compulsory Foreign Language). I chose Chinese because (a) it was a challenging language, and (b) I had no prior knowledge of it.
Now, of my five books, two are direct translations from Chinese to Tamil, and two more books introduce the basics of the Chinese language.
Language learning is a skill that anyone can acquire with the proper guidance. That's why I am interested in books like "Fluent Forever: How to Learn Any Language Fast and Never Forget It" by Gabriel Wyner, which provides practical advice on language learning.
Wyner, a western classical singer, founded Fluent Forever's language learning website and developed effective language learning methods.
Here, I discuss key points from his book

how to approach language learning as a game.
