Good morning everyone and welcome to today's UK weather forecast on Wednesday 5th January 2022
Current Situation: An arctic blast in bringing cold northerly winds across the country today.
Today:
Wednesday begins cold, sunny and frosty across much of the country with snow showers across Scotland and wintry showers in the west. There's ice on untreated roads and pavements especially in the north and west.
Through the day many of the showers will die out with the majority of the country becoming dry though a few scattered wintry showers will continue in the west and light snow showers persist across northern Scotland. The rest of the country will stay dry with sunny spells but it will be a cold day with temperatures ranging from 0C to 6C.
Tonight:
All places will be dry with long clear spells and light winds. We'll see a widespread and in places severe frost on what is likely to be the coldest night of the winter so far. Temperatures will range from -2C in the south west to -10C (or lower) across the Scottish snow fields. Widespread minima of -4C to -6C across much of the country.
Tomorrow:
A very cold and frosty start but wet and windy weather sweeps in from off the Atlantic through the day with the rain turning to heavy snow across Scotland and northern England. Significant accumulations of snow are likely over high ground in the northern half of the country and a covering of snow is possible even to low levels for a time across Scotland. Further south we'll have showery outbreaks of rain. Another very cold day with temperatures of -1C to 4C in most places though the far west and south west may see temperatures reaching 7C by late afternoon.
Outlook:
Friday: Cold and windy with sunny spells and wintry showers.
Saturday: Outbreaks of rain spreading eastwards. Milder in the south and west.
Sunday: Mostly dry with a frosty start. Rain in the far south west later. Cold in the north and east.
