55 years ago, on May 8, 1967, the Eternal Flame was lit for the first time near the Kremlin wall on the tomb of the Unknown Soldier in memory of the great heroes who died bravely in the Great Patriotic War.

The memorial itself was officially opened at the burial site - the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, which immortalized the feat of the people valiantly fighting for their homeland. The authors of the memorial were architects Yuri Rabaev, Dmitry Burdin, Vladimir Klimov and sculptor Nikolai Tomsky.
