As mean as they look, velvet swimming crabs (Necora puber) are found throughout the intertidal and subtidal waters of the Isle of Wight, with a particular preference for rocky areas with lots of crevices and holes to hide in. They are strikingly coloured crabs but also very aggressive, willing to defend themselves against any threat that approaches them. They are generalistic omnivores feeding on living and dead animal matter and algae.
