The American founders considered Magna Carta to be their most important inheritance because it enshrined the basic rights of Englishmen. In particular, the founders were committed to the idea of “due process of law” and the right to a trial by jury. Although these principles were actually quite limited in England, America’s founders augmented these rights and enshrined them in the Constitution.
