Michael Curtiz, the world-famous Hungarian-born filmmaker known as the director of Casablanca, was born in Budapest on 24 December 1886. He began his career as an actor, but was soon attracted to film: in 1912 he directed the first feature-length Hungarian film, Today and Tomorrow. Within a few years, he had become one of the leading directors in Hungarian film production, but he was dissatisfied with his opportunities and in 1919 headed for Vienna. His monumental films on historical and biblical subjects were also recognized in Hollywood, and in 1927 he was signed by Warner Brothers. Curtiz adapted easily to the demands of the American film industry, and for twenty-seven years the studio relied on his talent and hard work. He had no problem with the change to sound and was the first director to work with colour technology. During his Hollywood career, he directed more than a hundred films and was at home in almost every genre.
