In the face of an evolving threat from North Korea, strengthening U.S.-South Korea-Japan trilateral relations is of increasingly greater importance. Yet, there are many challenges on the road ahead. The trilateral relationship must overcome uncertainty from leadership transitions in the U.S. and South Korea as well as the reemergence of national identity issues. Shinzo Abe and Donald Trump have established an early rapport, though it is still unclear how relations between South Korea and the United States and Japan will develop once the new administration is in place in Seoul.
