You can take root stems by simply digging some of the root and stem out of the soil or sand. I planted them directly into starter containers and they did really well - no doubt you can plant them directly into the soil, as well. They were doing great where I put them so later I planted them in the soil in the same spot. They require full sun for good growth and reportedly are a great plant for attracting hummingbirds. Though Cypress Vine leaves seem very delicate they can be a very aggressive grower and you should place them in your garden in an appropriate area for your specific gardening needs and objectives. Cypress vine might be considered an invasive species depending upon your geographical location and botanical situation. Happy Gardening!
