Fort Wayne Northrop, in its third year of existence, won the 64th Annual State Basketball Championship before 17,255 fans in the Indiana University Assembly Hall. Coached by Bob Dille, Northrop displayed an awesome defense as they turned back a determined Jeffersonville team in the low scoring final game 59-56.
In the first afternoon game Jeffersonville defeated Franklin's Grizzly
Cubs by a 63-52 count and Fort Wayne Northrop advanced by downing Lafayette's Bronchos 63-49. The contest was intensified by a new record attendance of 17,412 for the afternoon session.
Northrop was led by Walter Jordan and Mike Muff with strong support
from the other starters Maurice Drinks, James Wimbley and Tom Madden.
The Board of Controll selected Jon and Don McGlocklin of Franklin as
co-recipients of the coveted Arthur L. Trester Award for Mental Attitude.
This marked the second time in history that the award was presented to twin brothers.
A total of 420 teams participated in the Basketball Tourney Series.
